Huge work of art on Rembrandtplein
Rembrandtplein has gained another eye-catcher: a tall silver sculpture by artist Ronald A. Westerhuis (1971). For the next two years, the sculpture Waterlife (2018) will stand directly opposite the famous statue of Rembrandt by Louis Royer (1840). An encounter between an old master and a new one.
Westerhuis’ sculpture is like a mirror. Looking over your shoulder, the most famous Dutch artist watches you: Rembrandt (1606-1669). He often looked at himself in a mirror when working on his self-portraits in his studio. In Westerhuis’ sculpture, you see more than just Rembrandt’s reflection. Westerhuis includes the entire square. An invitation to also be mindful of the world around you.
