The Rembrandt House Museum is not a museum where you only walk past paintings. Here, children learn with their hands: they step into Rembrandt’s actual home, see how he worked and get to try things themselves. That is exactly what makes it a perfect outing for families.
In Rembrandt’s studio they discover how he made his paint, from toxic lead and bright red lice to fragrant linseed oil and even pig’s bladders. During the daily demonstrations it feels as if you are looking over the master’s shoulder. It is no surprise the museum carries the Kidsproof seal of approval.

With children a visit takes from 45 minutes to about an hour and a half. A few handy choices make it a relaxed and fun morning or afternoon.
Tip: the multimedia tour with Kwast the dog is free. Ask about it on arrival, so the children have something fun to listen to and look for throughout the visit.

Rain in Amsterdam? the Rembrandt House Museum is entirely indoors, so you stay dry the whole time. While it drizzles outside, children explore the studio, watch a demonstration and get to work in the drawing studio.
That makes the museum an ideal indoor outing with children, exactly for those days when a park or playground is not an option. A visit takes from 45 minutes to about an hour and a half, enough to sit out a shower and do something fun and educational at the same time.
The Rembrandt House Museum is also a popular destination for school trips and groups. The museum has an educational programme in which pupils get to know Rembrandt in a playful way: from a free treasure hunt through the house to an etching workshop where they make their own print. For teachers, a preparatory lesson is available via LessonUp.

Is the museum suitable for pushchairs?
The old house can only be reached via narrow, steep 17th-century spiral staircases, and cannot be accessed with a pushchair. The modern exhibition wing is accessible by lift. For the youngest, consider a baby carrier.
Can very young children come along?
Certainly. Children under 5 come free. They especially enjoy the demonstrations and the drawing studio.
Do I need to book in advance?
For a regular visit you book a time slot online. You do not need to book separately for the demonstrations and exhibitions; for special workshops you do.
What does a visit with children cost?
