This morning we shared a detail of an artwork on our social media pages. Did you know what artwork that detail was from? You can see the answer here below: Jan van Noordt, Boy with a Bird’s Nest, c. 1659 (The Rembrandt House Museum, Amsterdam).
In this painting we see a boy holding a bird’s nest filled with eggs. His mischievous smile might mean that he stole this nest from a tree. Van Noordt has made a similar painting of a girl holding a basket with flowers. The two paintings may have originally belonged together as a set. Jan van Noordt was mainly a history painter, depicting stories from the Bible and mythology. He has only made a few genre paintings like this one. Noordt was never a pupil of Rembrandt, but he was inspired by the master and by works of artists close to Rembrandt, like Pieter Lastman and Gerbrand van den Eeckhout.
