schilder_in_atelier-72Gerrit (Gerard) Dou

Gerrit Dou was thirteen when took lessons from the twenty-two year-old Rembrandt in Leiden in 1628. This painting was previously called Rembrandt in his Studio. It shows the objects a painter might have had in his workshop, all in the service of his art. Or in other words the ideal workshop.

This workshop interior shows that Rembrandt would get his pupils to draw from life in groups. In the last stage of their training they had to learn to depict the human figure in all kinds of positions. On a ledge in the wall are casts of figures used as teaching material.

Drawing from life in Rembrandt’s Studio, c. 1650. Pen and brush in brown, black chalk, heightened with white, 18 x 26.6 cm., Hessisches Landesmuseum, Darmstadt
