Visitors came into Rembrandt’s house through this imposing entrance hall. They could sit on one of the chairs ranged around the walls. Anyone sitting on the wooden platform by the window would be out of the cold draughts and would have a good view of what was happening in the street. The walls were covered with paintings by Rembrandt himself and by other masters. They were for sale. Rembrandt will have kept his business papers in the little room near the stairs, which is called the ‘small office’ in the inventory.
