
Kitchen (Keucken)

The kitchen was the most comfortable room in Rembrandts house. The fire was kept burning most of the time. This is where the cooking was done and where the household ate. The maid slept in the box bed. The door next to the draining board opens on to the courtyard, where there was a privy and a lean-to. It may well have been under this shelter that Rembrandt painted the Night Watch. The small door by the fireplace opened on to an alleyway that led to the Zwanenburgwal
